With our After-School program at Aim and Focus Karate our students are taught discipline, manners, respect, and self-esteem. With a traditional day-care or extended-day programs, children run around and play.  The opportunities to learn and develop new skills are limited.  Our program  also focuses on your child's physical fitness.  We work out hard in karate class but we also have tremendous fun playing high energy games with the children.  Parents visiting our classes can feel the energy in the room.

We are focused on providing what we do best --- teaching a martial art.  Using this strong foundation, we’ve built a fun and exciting After-School program.  The students in our program work very hard, both physically and mentally.  This is an intensive physical program.  Yet, students of different ages and abilities are always welcome.  The young man pictured to the left has been with us for several years.  He has a great attitude and tries very hard no matter what he's working on.  He simply loves the challenge.

Dr. Randy Pausch touched millions of people across the globe with his "The Last Lecture" presentation and follow-up book (Note:  I heartily recommend both if you're unfamiliar with his work).  One aspect of Dr. Pausch's work is the "head fake" -- teaching something without the student realizing the hidden meaning of the material.  Our program at Aim and Focus Karate is all about using the "head fake".  Our students learn about self esteem, self control, respect, discipline, humility (something young people today often miss), setting goals, achieving goals and what to do when their goals are not met, all without realizing that is what they're working on.

We concentrate on a limited number of schools for our program.  We want to develop a strong relationship with each campus.  Unlike other daycare operations that might pickup from numerous schools in order to fill their roster, we focus on providing a high quality program that attracts students from the schools we work with.  We have spent years developing our partnerships with each campus and truly enjoy a great working relationship with each school.  In many cases we've been able to work with the schools to address issues that have come up in the classroom.  This simply wouldn't be possible if we didn't have such a strong working relationship with each of the campuses we service.

Success in the classroom is one of our primary objectives.  Working with parents we strive to help each student be successful where it matters most...in their school classroom.  We practice respect and discipline in the do jang, but in the classroom is where the real benefits can be achieved.

We don't offer a lot of "promotional incentives" ("Get this free", "Enroll today before time runs out", etc.) to attract students to our programs.  We simply offer an excellent program to the community we serve.  I treasure the reputation of Aim and Focus Karate.  My staff and I have worked very hard building that reputation and we intend to keep earning it each and every day.

Each day consists of the following:

bullet Pickup from local RRISD schools
bullet Brief period for kids to get settled and enjoy a snack
bullet Group discussion time with Sa Bom Nim (Master) Ben Johnson
bullet Formal karate class focused on a particular aspect of martial arts training
bullet Activity time (dodge ball, obstacle courses, etc.)
bullet Dedicated homework time (especially for the older students in our program)

All instructors at Aim and Focus Karate are licensed by the International Tang Soo Do Federation and have years of experience teaching Tang Soo Do plus working with children.  We are blessed to have both men and women as instructors in our program.  This enables us to "identify" with all our students and help them reach even greater rewards.

Working in a non-competitive environment, students will develop:

bullet

Fitness

bullet

Self Esteem

bullet

Improved Coordination

bullet

Goal Setting and Achievement

bullet

Group Social Skills

bullet

Discipline/Respect

Our belt system reinforces our student’s sense of accomplishment and rewards for hard work.  All kids in the After-School program are eligible to test for new belt rank.  As a Master Instructor in Tang Soo Do it is my obligation to teach students to the best of my ability.  I won't promote a student to a new rank unless they've demonstrated their abilities in class.  Each student is evaluated as individuals and rewarded accordingly.  We have certain standards for each rank that must be achieved, however it is how we apply these guidelines to each individual student that sets us apart from other martial arts programs.  Our students are truly successful and achieve great success.  We marked a wonderful milestone in October, 2008.  The first student from our After-School Program reached the rank of Black Belt.  What's even more exciting, we have several After-School students preparing for their Black Belt tests in 2009.  These are not "quickie" Black Belts in 2 years, but rather dedicated training efforts over the course of 4-5 years.  They truly are "Black Belts".
